January 25, 2008, was my last day of employment at Hawaiian Telcom. But it was yesterday that almost 50 management people were processed and removed from the premises. I will admit it was a very strange day. When I arrived in the morning we had heard that our boss was already let go the evening before. For the rest of the morning it was a waiting game to see if you would be summoned to HR for an exit interview. It was like a cattle call to see, one by one, people being escorted down to the first floor to be processed out. This was the layoff that was pending since November of last year. I was chatting with one of my cohorts wondering who would be next. Sure enough as soon as my friend left my office, I was asked to grab my pager and cell phone head downstairs. The entrance to the exit interview room was lined with people, presumably HR and security personnel. There were a few that looked like bouncers, just in case people got out of hand I assume. Once in the room I noticed the windows were papered shut. That way people could not look inside at the distraught expressions. The exit interview lasted about 2 minutes where one of the VPs reassured me that this was not a performance issue. They must have had to say that because Ron Mizutani, the HT spokesperson reiterated that point to the media. Once done there I did a quick review with HR on what the severance package consisted of and was shown which door to exit. I had never been to the bowels of this side of the building and wasn't sure where I was exiting. I came out on Adams Lane out of a very unassuming doorway. Once out it all seemed like a dream, perhaps some might say a nightmare, had finally ended. Change and transitions are always unsettling but that is the nature of life. I like to get philosophical at times like these. Personally, I have been here before and look forward to much brighter days. As I told another friend of mine, I am not exactly sure what I am going to do but one thing is for sure, I am going to aim squarely at quality of life.

Sorry to hear about this Burt. But you know what? Back when you started at HT I was thinking that the dark side was robbing us of your crazed creativity and like that. So now you are a roamin' ronin tech and raconteur again! Congratulations on that and I hope you get to wander about a bit before having to do the 925 again. Keep us filled in.
Best,
Doug
I think what's coolest about the wisdom of age is that you've been through enough ups and downs to know that life goes on and you typically look back on the last adventure and realize it was the best thing that could have happened.
You're a great guy, Burt, and well-respected in the community. Give yourself a well-deserved break and when you're ready, I'm sure the right next adventure will be waiting for you.
Good for you man!
Interesting post, Burt, but from where I sat across the street (ie HPU), I'm not surprised as it seemed HT has been struggling to right itself. As a man of many talents, there are better spots for you in Honolulu's IT galaxy, and I'm sure they'll find you. Hope you can take your time finding the best match - and if you want to chill out in Thailand meanwhile, you're welcome here!
I hope we don't loose you here in Hawaii. That news really sucks, although I agree with the other posters that you will find something more funky.
I imagine HT will continue doing more of this unaloha-like business. What did we expect from the Carlyle Group? It is time to watch Michael Moore and get excited about those primaries.
Hang in there, Burt. I look forward to hearing of your next venture.
Burt - You're one of the finest people I've ever met. And then there's your genius and creativity on top of that! I hope this road ultimately leads to the quality of life you want and deserve. Proud to be your friend -- Dan Smith
I can't wait to see what you do next.!
If the success of the unconferenz conference you put together is any indication of what's possible, then the rest of the community should be pretty excited as well.
When I heard about the layoffs I was hoping you were not affected. As the others before me have expressed, you were meant for bigger and better things and we're all excited to see what your next endeavor will be! Good luck!
Wow, thanks guys for the comments and the support. I feel liberated and recharged. You would not believe how much of an energy drain a place like HT is right now. But that is behind me. As for where I am headed I'll borrow a quote from Capt. Kirk, "Second Star to the right and straight on 'til morning."
Burt, you're truly one of the most dynamic and intelligent people I've met in a long time. I don't doubt for a heartbeat that you are now headed for an exciting and high impact adventure. I look forward to hearing all about it!
Sincerely,
Michal Anne
Sorry to hear you lost your job but then again I think this is a great chance to start something new and interesting.
If I were you I would head to Ala Moana beach park and look for "the 3 trees" (My friends and I coined that by the way). They are near the second lifeguard stand on the Diamond Head side, and hand out for a week or two or three!! It's a really good place to do a brain dump and reboot, imho.
Let us know if we can be of help.
